Vandal Wines is a fascinating, unconventional project that essentially functions as an "insurgent" creative outlet for three of Marlborough’s most accomplished winemakers. Because these individuals hold prominent, high-profile positions at major, established wineries, their contracts prevent them from promoting outside projects. Consequently, they maintain strict anonymity, allowing them to step away from the commercial constraints of their day jobs to pursue a more "lo-fi" and experimental approach. 

The Vandal Wine Co. 2022 "Gonzo Combat Rouge" Field Blend is an eccentric, low-intervention red wine crafted by three anonymous winemakers in Marlborough, New Zealand, who utilize a unique blend composed of 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Viognier. This unconventional field blend undergoes a spontaneous 70% whole-cluster carbonic co-fermentation before aging for six months in seasoned French oak barrels, resulting in a naturally cloudy, unfined, and unfiltered profile. On the nose, it delivers highly expressive, aromatic layers of sweet raspberry, ripe cherry, and primary red fruits interwoven with distinct savory herbal and floral notes. The palate is supple, plush, and incredibly juicy, striking a Beaujolais Nouveau-esque character with a crunchy edge, vibrant acidity, and a very fine, grippy tannin profile. To experience the wine at its absolute best, it should be served with a light chill between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Because of its bright, fruity acidity and supple texture, this red blend functions exceptionally well alongside casual backyard cooking, particularly when pairing it with grilled sausages, roasted red peppers, or classic burgers fresh off the barbecue. The structured yet plush mouthfeel also complements lean, rustic proteins like grilled lamb chops, venison, or wild boar ragu tossed with fresh herbs. It pairs beautifully with light snacks and nibbles ahead of dinner, pairing cleanly with young chèvre goat cheese, fresh figs, or tomato-based flatbreads.
