Hendry wines

Hendry Wine Dinner with Therese Brown and Chef Michael Pupillo

Thursday, October 12, 2023
6:30pm
$135.00 per person, all-inclusive
At a private home near Taylor's Wine Shop in North Raleigh

Come see what eight decades of farming in Napa Valley tastes like!

George Hendry and his family have grown grapes on the same land in Napa Valley since 1939. Through more than eighty years of harvests, our connection to the land has deepened, and our knowledge has grown.

The 203-acre Hendry Ranch is situated in the low, rolling hills just northwest of Napa, at the foot of Mt. Veeder, and includes 114 acres under vine. This location in the valley experiences substantial marine influence, allowing us to grow many different types of wine grapes. All Hendry wines are made only from estate grapes, and are crafted to highlight the unique conditions of this very special place.

Hendry has been in the Top 25 Wineries list in the San Francisco Chronicle in 2021, 2022, and 2023.  In 2021 they were listed in Wine & Spirits Magazine's Top 100 Wineries.  Therese Brown, Hendry's National Sales Manager, will be here from the winery to teach us all about this unassuming family-run estate.

“Straightforward, delicious, and priced with an eye toward value, the Hendry wines offer an unpretentious counterpoint to an increasingly precious Napa Valley. The operation remains firmly in family hands, and the already impressive quality seems to improve with each passing year.” Napa Valley Then and Now, -Sommelier Kelli White

We are stoked to be partnering with Chef Michael Pupillo for this dinner. Michael is the son of first-generation Americans from Sicily who settled in Deer Park Long Island, NY. Born hard of hearing and in a household where English was the second language Michael found his way to communicate by sharing his gift of cooking with family and friends. Michael is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and formally started his career at Panama Hatties, which was rated one of Long Islands best restaurants consecutively for 4 years. He then traveled extensively through France, Spain, Italy, and Sicily as a stagiaire to further his knowledge and craft. Michael then settled at the Ritz Carlton, Palm Beach for 8 years. After moving to North Carolina, Michael worked at the Washington Duke Inn and Rose Hill Conference Center before settling in Asheville where he is currently the Chef de Cuisine at the Omni Grove Park Inn Sunset Terrance, Great Hall Bar, and Edison Restaurant.

This is much better than High Tea, Y'all!  WE LOVE CHAMPAGNE!!!  Join us for an afternoon of Henriot Champagnes and unique and tasty bites created by Guest Chef Matt Fern.  As if that's not enough, we have our FUN and FUNNY Henriot expert back again!  Chris Lozano, better known as C-Lo, will be here, fresh off his trip to the Henriot Champagne House, to share the stories and history of these gorgeous wines.   Last year, our Henriot event sold out so quickly. This year, we have scheduled two back to back events. Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15.

Afternoon Champagnes:
Henriot Brut Souverain NV (Reg. $80)
Henriot Blanc de Blancs NV (Reg. $98)

Matt Fern, culinary extraordinaire :)  Many of you know Matt as a hospitality guru in Raleigh, having been beverage director for AC Restaurant Group, partner in Poole's Diner, or head of the food and beverages at Longleaf Hotel and Lounge.  Matt's the proud owner of his dream come true, (ish) Delicatessen.  His warm demeanor and crazy culinary creativity make him one of a kind.  We have yet to curate this menu, but it will definitely be awesome! This will be a serve yourself cocktail style afternoon, so come casual, thirsty, and happy!
In 1640, the Henriot family settled in Champagne and began acquiring land to plant vines.  Apolline Henriot founded Maison Henriot in 1808, and it has been independent and family-owned for more than two centuries.  To shed light on her lands in Montagne de Reims, she created the first Henriot Cuvée, now known as Henriot Brut Souverain.  In 1880, Apolline's great grandson, Paul Henriot, married a young woman, Marie Marguet, from the Côte des Blancs.  This marriage gave way to a real transition of the Maison Henriot's vineyards, now having access to estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and  the Côte des Blancs.  Come taste the current offerings from this historic family owned Champagne house, and take a walk through history with us.

Non-refundable 72 hours in advance.

More about Blackbird Vineyards

Under the guidance of acclaimed “Winemaker of the Year” Aaron Pott, we craft Bordeaux inspired wine with incredible Napa Valley grapes. We prefer to be uncaged. Instead of relying on one single vineyard, we spread our wings and source grapes from all over Napa Valley.

“Every wine in the Blackbird collection is a true expression of the Napa Valley, with each possessing extraordinary structure and finesse. These limited production wines display the complexity extracted from the highest quality fruit and devoted winemaking techniques.”
–Aaron Pott, Winemaker

We had the pleasure of hosting this wine dinner in March, and it sold out so quickly that we have scheduled back to back repeats! We will be doing identical dinners on Tuesday, November 14 and Wednesday, November 15.  Burgundy, France is a region steeped in ages of wine history and excitingly distinctive terroir.  Wines hailing from this region are mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with some sparkling thrown in, and they are as diverse as they are delectable. Come learn about this incredible wine region from "The Burgundy Wine Man" Steve Pignatiello, who has an extreme passion for Burgundy and owns P. Comms Intl Burgundy Importer.  Scroll down to learn more about Steve.
We're thrilled to welcome back Serge Falcoz-Vigne as our guest Chef for this gorgeously paired and coursed meal.   We at Taylor's have been working on a wine dinner partnership with Serge since he was the Executive Chef at St. Jacques French restaurant several years ago.  He is as talented as he is entertaining, and his excitement for this dinner is palpable. Each evening, this event will be limited to 22 guests.

About Steve Pignatiello

Sommelier Steve Pignatiello first traveled to France as a Dartmouth College student in 1979. Over the past 39 years, he has gained a comprehensive knowledge of the country. His passion, however, centers on the world-famous wine region called “La Bourgogne” (Burgundy). Steve says, “Burgundy is a way of life. It’s a tiny region where the best wines are made by mom-and-pop operations, not large corporations.”

These wines are so special and so good because the families have total control over the winemaking process from start to finish. As one winemaker says, “I put my heart in every bottle of wine.” Each family owns the vines and personally works in the vineyards, pruning the vines, hand-picking and sorting the grapes, and overseeing the winemaking process in its entirety.

Over the years, Steve has had the good fortune to become friends with some of these highly respected winemakers. His passion for and first-hand knowledge of their wines have earned him the nickname “The Burgundy Wine Man.” In recognition of his contributions to the promotion of Burgundy wines – as well as his close, personal ties with many of the region’s top winemakers – Steve was inducted into the prestigious Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin at the historic Chateau du Clos de Vougeot. Furthermore, Steve is privileged to serve as the Vice Conseiller Gastronomique for the Chaine des Rotisseurs.

Steve has been honored as the Burgundy authority at the annual Food and Wine Classic at the Cloister on Sea Island, Ga., as well as at the annual Wine and Food Festival at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in Asheville, N.C. He served as sommelier for the kickoff dinner at the 2001 PGA Championship and was featured in an article in Travel and Leisure Golf magazine coinciding with the Masters Golf Tournament in April 2003. He was also selected to present Burgundy at Disney’s Epcot International Food and Wine Festival in 2006 and again in 2007.

“Many wine lovers in the U.S. shy away from Burgundy because of the staggering array of vineyards and winemakers,” Steve says. “So while many people in our country know a lot about wine, if they have one area of weakness, it’s usually Burgundy.”

And that’s why Steve formed P. Comms Int’l

Taylor's Wine Shop's relationship with Steve Reynolds goes a long way back.  We are so thrilled to continue the tradition of annual wine dinners with one of our favorite wineries. Steve's son, Cameron Reynolds, will be joining us at this event and we are so excited to have him back.
And of course, there may be a Penta Tequila toast :)
Have you been to Theatre Raleigh yet?  It's a gorgeous venue that offers Broadway caliber theatrical performances and concerts in a local community setting.  My Theatre Raleigh friend, Lauren Kennedy Brady and I were spitballing ideas about how to collaborate on some community outreach, and we came up this KILLER event that combines our love for the arts, wine, fine foods, and Raleigh friends!  Our fabulous catering cohort David Casteel from Mitchell-Casteel A Fine Catered Affair will be onsite serving up some tasty heavy appetizers.  Cameron Reynolds will be there with their Napa Valley wines.  There will be a fun live auction for some amazing items (think Wine, Travel, Bourbon) available with all proceeds benefitting Theatre Raleigh. More Information on Reynolds Family Wines and Theatre Raleigh
We are huge fans of Reynolds Family Winery.  Oh, and Steve’s Penta Tequila :)
Steve and his family have managed to fashion their dream into a wondrous reality in Napa Valley.  Their wines are driven by superior vineyard location, fanatical vineyard management, minimalist winemaking, and a bias for learning from experience.  They believe in harvesting at the peak of ripeness to create wines that are intensely flavored, luscious and approachable on release.
This will be an unforgettable evening, and we hope you'll join us.
Theatre Raleigh is a non-profit, locally produced professional theatre company dedicated to inclusion and diversity, enriching our community through innovative and intimate
theatrical experiences.
Tickets non-refundable 72 hours in advance.

5:30pm - 7:00pm at Taylor’s Wine Shop
We're excited to welcome Kim Woodward, the USA rep for one of our favorite Australian Wineries, Powell & Son.  If you're a regular reader of the Taylor's emails or visitor of the shop, then you probably already know that we're a big fan of the Powell & Son Wines. For those of you unfamiliar with Powell & Son Winery, Dave Powell is the former winemaker and founder of Australia's iconic Torbreck Wines, whose The Laird Shiraz ($425) and RunRig Shiraz/Viognier ($225) are often  mentioned alongside Australia's most sought after wines like Grange, Hill of Grace, and Astralis. After leaving Torbreck, Dave and his son Callum founded Powell & Son and the wines they've been crafting at their Riverside winery have done nothing to diminish the incredible winemaking legacy Dave achieved at Torbreck.
Attendee Parking - Please note! If you plan on attending the tasting, please remember that we CANNOT use the Bayleaf Vet Clinic's spots in front of their building. Extra parking IS AVAILABLE at the "little white church" just past the vet clinic. THANK YOU!

Friday, June 9th, 5:30pm to 7pm
at Taylor’s Wine Shop
Steve Sommerville, owner of Ocean South Imports, will be here to pour selections from his portfolio featuring selections from Eastern Europe (Georgia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia).
Wines have been made in this region of the world just as long, if not longer than the Western European countries that we're most familiar with. For a variety of reasons, they've been largely unavailable in the USA, but in recent years they've begun popping up. Should be a fun, delicious and eye opening tasting for all!

Kelly Peterson founded Switchback Ridge in 1999 with the dream of continuing her family’s legacy that began with her great-grandparents over 100 years ago.  When he was a boy, Kelly's father, John Peterson, helped plant a special vineyard of Petite Sirah that is still producing wine today.  Kelly grew up in Calistoga and spent most of her childhood on the family's vineyard.   Above all she is most proud of her daughter, Ashley, who joined the company in 2015 and her son, Devon, who is currently studying viticulture and enology. With the future of Switchback Ridge in good hands, she looks forward to focusing on her most recent and cherished role as “Mimi” to her granddaughters, Ava and Eliza, the sixth generation already in training!
Their Peterson Vineyard is now planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. Come taste her new vintages, including some wines that are only available at the winery.  Kelly is one of the sweetest and most genuine vineyard owners in Napa Valley.
And, drumroll please.....Matt Fern is moonlighting as our guest Chef!  Many of you know Matt as a hospitality guru in Raleigh, having been beverage director for AC Restaurant Group, partner in Poole's Diner, or head of the food and beverages at Longleaf Hotel and Lounge.  Matt's the proud owner of his dream come true, (ish) Delicatessen.  His warm demeanor and crazy culinary creativity make him one of a kind.  We have yet to curate this menu, but it will definitely be awesome!
This will be a serve yourself cocktail style of dinner, so come casual, hungry, and happy!

Benevolent Neglect Wine Dinner
with owner and winemaker Matt Nagy
Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 6:30pm
At a private home near Taylor's Wine Shop in North Raleigh

$85.00 per person, all-inclusive

At Benevolent Neglect, they search across California, from coast to mountains, from Mendocino to Carmel, to find the unique and the magical standout vineyards that showcase their own unique terroirs.  Using a minimal intervention philosophy to winemaking, these unique vineyards yield wines that are pure and clean, fresh and delicious.  Matt Nagy is the owner and winemaker for BN Wines.  He worked several harvests across the world before settling in the Napa Valley to work for some of this generations greatest wine talents.  After stints in New York, New Zealand, and Washington Matt apprenticed first under Thomas Rivers Brown making world class wines as his cellarmaster.  Shortly thereafter, Benevolent Neglect was started, and as it grew he took a new job to work with Steve Matthiasson. Two masters of their crafts in the Napa Valley.  We at Taylor's Wine Shop have been supporting Benevolent Neglect since its inception, and we're super excited to have Matt as our guest.

AND we've got our new downtown Raleigh whole hog BBQ guys at Longleaf Swine handling the catering!  But it's not your average BBQ, for certain. The patience and satisfaction that comes from slow smoking meat with an all wood fire is what it's all about for Longleaf Swine's owner Adam, that's where he's happiest.  This will be a serve-yourself cocktail style of dinner.  All the better to really get to know Matt and his wines.  In the spirit of collaboration and generosity, Matt is sending us some wines that are not normally in distribution for this dinner event!

We just couldn't pass up this opportunity!  We just got the nod on a wine dinner with our good buddy Trent Moffett from Willamette Valley! He's one of the most genuine, friendly, and talented winemakers that we know.  AND we've got our new downtown Raleigh whole hog BBQ guys at Longleaf Swine handling the catering!  Pulled Pork, Brisket, plus all the sides.  But it's not your average BBQ, for certain. The patience and satisfaction that comes from slow smoking meat with an all wood fire is what it's all about for Longleaf Swine's owner Adam, that's where he's happiest.  This will be a serve-yourself cocktail style of dinner.  All the better to really get to know Trent.
Moffett Vineyards traces its legacy to the Livingston Moffett Winery, which was founded in 1976 in the heart of the Napa Valley by Trent Moffett's parents, Diane and John. For 22 years Trent helped grow the family winery from the cellars to the marketplace. Upon their retirement and sale of the winery in 2005, a generational transition was made by Trent into its successor Moffett Vineyards.

For 9 years his estate winery was located and atop Howell Mountain, above the Napa Valley, where Trent started his love affair with the Pinot Noir grape.  In 2014, Trent and his wife Colleen and their three children relocated to Willamette Valley in Oregon.  It is here that Trent crafts some amazing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while still keeps his connection with his family's Napa Cabernet.

FUTO Estate Wine Dinner with Jesse Rodriguez
Tuesday, March 21, 2023
6:30pm
At a private home near Taylor's Wine Shop in North Raleigh
 $350 per person, all-inclusive
FUTO Estate.  It's a story of true beauty and passion. On the western hillsides of Oakville, Napa Valley, lies FUTO Estate. Nestled in gently rolling hillsides between the valley floor and the Mayacamas Mountains, Tom and Kyle Futo began their winery in 2002. They expanded their estate vineyard holdings with the purchase of a picturesque property in Stags Leap District where their Cabernet vines grow on volcanic rock outcroppings. They believe the pinnacle of wine quality comes from hand farming hillside vineyards. The extra effort it takes is justified at every harvest.  Their vineyard management is 100% in-house, and they feel this is the best way to not only achieve consistency, but to also improve with every vintage. Their attention to every tiny detail is astounding. Their winery is a stunning example of artistic form that is perfectly functional. Small tanks for fermenting separate vineyard lots sit above the cellar rooms where the free run juice is fed by gravity through their minimal intervention winemaking process. No detail was overlooked in producing these world-class wines, and they are a treat to any collector's cellar.
Jesse Rodriguez from FUTO Estate will be here to share with us the intricacies that make FUTO one of a kind.  He holds just about every wine and sommelier certification possible (Head Some at The French Laundry when they won their inaugural Michelin three-star award, SWS, FWS, CWE, DipWSET, Advanced Sommelier, James Beard Nominee), and is very close to achieving his Master Sommelier honorable distinction.  He heads up national sales for FUTO, and is a wine educator by several qualifications and by personality. We're excited to welcome him to our NC coast!
We're thrilled to have Michell-Casteel - A Fine Catered Affair back preparing a beautiful pairing dinner to accompany these wines.  They pull out all the stops when preparing and serving a four course wine dinner, and this one is shaping up to be delectable!  Stay tuned for the menu.  Here are the wines.

Wade Cellars was born out of Dwyane Wade’s love of the great wines of Napa Valley. Since the first vintage in 2012, the production range has expanded to a diverse collection of wines that are inspired by California’s rich winemaking tradition with a healthy dose of DWade style.

Pulido-Walker Wine Dinner with owner Donna Walker

Wednesday, November 16, 2022, 6:30pm

At a private home near Taylor's Wine Shop in North Raleigh

We're thrilled to have Michell-Casteel - A Fine Catered Affair back preparing a beautiful dinner to accompany these wines:
2020 Mending Wall Stone on Stone
2020 Pulido-Walker Mt. Veeder Chardonnay
2018 Pulido-Walker Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon $275, RP 98+, JD 98
2019 Pulido-Walker Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon $275, JD 99

Donna Walker and Mark Pulido began visiting Napa Valley in the 1980's.  Both with backgrounds in Pharmacy, they combined their passion for fine wine with their unwavering quest for excellence in quality.  They patiently sought out the finest blocks in the best vineyards.  The journey from the inaugural release of our 2010 vintage to building Mending Wall Winery (where Pulido-Walker wines are made) in 2014 to establishing all estate vineyards by 2019 has enabled Pulido~Walker to control every aspect of Quality, Quality, Quality (Q3) from vine to bottle. This Q3 obsession yields exceptional single-vineyard wines from diverse and distinctive locations in the Napa Valley: our Estate Vineyard on Mt. Veeder in the western Mayacamas Mountains, Melanson Vineyard located on Pritchard Hill in the rugged mountains east of Oakville, and our Policy Estate Vineyard on the valley floor on State Lane in Yountville. Each is a grand cru site producing authentic, superb wines.

At Mending Wall Winery Thomas Rivers Brown’s winemaking technique takes a non-interventionist approach crafting natural wines that reflect their unique terroir—rich, savory, and complex—with rounded tannins and long finishes that are approachable young yet built for decades-long cellar aging. The small and intense clusters are gently handled, carefully sorted and de-stemmed—never crushed—and then cold soaked for flavorful extraction. The wine from each vineyard block and clone is separately fermented in small lots. During winemaking synthetic yeast, sulfur, acid, and enzymes are forbidden and the choicest lots are bottled without fining or filtration. Pulido~Walker wines are barrel aged in 100% French Oak from the finest Old World cooperages.

Elyse Wine Dinner with winery owner Josh Peoples
Thursday, November 3, 2022
6:30pm
Coquette Brasserie
4351 The Circle at North Hills Street, Raleigh, NC 27609
$125.00 per person, all-inclusive
Drumroll please....Elyse Winery owner Josh Peoples is coming back to town!  We had a blast sharing laughs and stories with him when he was here earlier in the year, and we made sure to get him on the books for a Taylor's Wine Shop dinner this fall.  We've had so much interest in this dinner that I know it will sell out quickly.
Elyse Winery history dates back to 1983 when Nancy and Ray Coursen moved to Napa Valley to chase that dream.  Their daughter, Elyse, was born in 1986, and they started Elyse Winery in 1987.  After a decade of nomadic winemaking at various custom crush facilities, in 1997 they purchased a small winery and vineyard on Hoffman Lane, the home of Elyse Winery and tasting room. For the next twenty years Elyse would become the launching pad for countless Napa Valley wine lovers to explore some of the region's most celebrated vineyards.
After thirty years of stewardship, Ray and Nancy decided that it was time to retire. What began as a casual conversation over dinner evolved into the next chapter for Elyse Winery. In October 2018, Ray and Nancy Coursen sold Elyse Winery to fellow Yountville locals, Josh Peeples, and his partner, Cheryl. Perfect timing for both parties, the torch has been passed to continue the same passion for the decades to come. In addition, Josh brings his other brand Addax, also made by Russell Bevan, to the Elyse family of wines, and we will introduce that brand to you at this dinner!
We're thrilled to be partnering with Coquette Brasserie, and they will no doubt be serving up a beautifully paired three course dinner with the following wines.  Stay tuned for the menu, but know the tickets will most likely sell out before the menu is finalized.
Dinner Wines

Andrew Geoffrey Wine Event with owner and winemaker Peter Thompson
Friday, October 7, 2022
6:30pm
$50.00 per person, all-inclusive (thanks to the generosity and culinary talents of Peter)
At a private home near Taylor's Wine Shop in North Raleigh
Peter Thompson makes some absolutely intriguing, textural, and gorgeous Cabernets from his estate vineyard in Diamond Mountain, Napa Valley.

Since visiting the Napa Valley as a college student in 1973, Peter Thompson set his sights on producing world class Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1995, after a 2-1/2 year search for the ultimate mountain vineyard site, Peter selected the property at 2000 feet atop Diamond Mountain. Having purchased undeveloped land with unlimited potential, Peter assembled a team consisting of viticulture and enology specialists to plan and execute planting of a state-of-the-art vineyard. Peter and his team navigated through the newly enacted Napa Valley Hillside Ordinance to clear the land and draft the most extensive erosion control plan ever devised in the Napa Valley, specifically designed
to take advantage of the renowned Diamond Mountain volcanic soils, 13 acres were carved out and planted
to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard was christened Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards after Peter’s two sons, Andrew and Geoffrey, and currently enjoys a reputation for producing mountainside grapes and Cabernet Sauvignon wine of unprecedented quality.

Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be prepared and provided by Peter Thompson, who is an amazing chef.  We hope you will join us for this casual, educational, and fun event!
Event Wines:
Servin Chablis 2019
Andrew Geoffrey Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
Andrew Geoffrey Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Andrew Geoffrey Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

free wine tasting

FREE tasting with Marta Poli of Italy's Castelfeder Vineyards
6:30-8:00 pm
Friday Sept. 30th
at Taylor's Wine Shop
About Castelfeder:

To enter into the world of Castelfeder is to soar across an unspoken threshold into the lush valleys of the high Adige River, hence the regional name, Alto Adige. Driving from Lake Garda, north from Veneto, through Trentino, you discover yourself, without warning, in what feels, sounds, and tastes like German wine country. Apple trees cover the valley floor, rubbing shoulders with Schiava, Pinot Grigio, and Lagrein vines. The generational devotion of the Giovanett family is deeply Italian--the winery is run by the third generation of grape growers. Alfons Giovanett founded the Castelfeder winery in 1969 and it is now his son, Gunther, and grandson, Ivan, who have taken over the management of the winery.

This transition to the younger generation has brought a delightful qualitative shift as well as a more modern production approach. While other nearby producers are making Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio that is mineral and acidic, Castelfeder produces wines that are lean and light with texture and depth as an added dimension. Vinifying exclusively in stainless steel for Mont Mes and the Classic “Cru” designated line, Castelfeder excels in bringing out the purest, freshest expression of their terroir. The Burgum Novum Riserve level wines see oak aging for 18 months before bottling. Their mark of elegance is an inviting creaminess on the mid-palette.

Fe Wine Dinner

Thursday, August 18th, 2022

6:30pm

Fe Wines are some of the hottest new wines we've brought into Taylor's since our last trip to Napa.  Fe makes only two terroir-driven bordeaux style blends each vintage. They are limited to what their gorgeous little vineyard offers them each year.  Planted on Spring Mountain to Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, winemaker Aaron Pott crafts a simply poetic Cabernet and a silky 26 Blend.  Fe is pronounced Fee, named after the Atomic symbol for Iron, found in the soil.

Enjoy an evening of catered heavy hors d'oeuvres, a toast of Champagne followed by an exclusive tasting of Fe's 2018 and 2019 wines, including their 2019 100 Point Cabernet, in the comfort of a private home.

A little about Barnett
Having grown up in Vancouver and Stockton respectively, Fiona and Hal Barnett became enamored with Napa Valley through frequent visits on the weekends of the early 1980’s.  A vision began to form, and after an extensive search, they purchased a 40-acre property located atop Spring Mountain in 1983. The lot consisted of nothing but trees, rocks, shrubs, and dozens of rattlesnakes. After extensive work clearing, grading, and terracing the land, the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted the following year. Since the very beginning, the intent was to produce small amounts of hand crafted wines that would showcase the unique characteristics found in grapes cultivated on such challenging, high elevation terrain.  Their first vintage was 1989.

Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Mandolin Raleigh
2519 Fairview Rd.  Raleigh, NC  27608
6:30pm
$135 per person, all-inclusive

I can't think of a better match.  Trent Moffett's wines and Fall seasonal foods at Mandolin Retaurant!  We were thrilled when Trent said he was coming for a visit. He's one of the most genuine, friendly, and talented winemakers that we know.

Moffett Vineyards traces its legacy to the Livingston Moffett Winery, which was founded in 1976 in the heart of the Napa Valley by Trent Moffetts’ parents, Diane and John. For 22 years Trent helped grow the family winery from the cellars to the marketplace. Upon their retirement and sale of the winery in 2005, a generational transition was made by Trent into his successor Moffett Vineyards.

For 9 years his estate winery was located and functioned atop Howell Mountain above the Napa Valley. It was here that Trent started his love affair with the Pinot Noir grape.  In 2014, Trent and his wife Colleen and their three children relocated to Willamette Valley in Oregon.  It is here that Trent crafts some amazing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while still keeps his connection with his family's Napa Cabernet.

Oak Farm Vineyards Virtual Tasting with Co-owner/Director of Winemaking,  Dan Panella, on April 9, 2021 at 6:30pm EST

Oak farm vineyard tasting

Oak Farm Vineyards is a family owned and operated estate winery located in Lodi CA.  The property originated in 1860 when William DeVries and his wife Cornelia Crowe farmed wheat and raised cattle. The property has been largely renovated with great attention to its’ heritage. DeVries was an enthusiastic lover of trees, particularly of oaks, and on the home ranch, he never allowed a tree to be cut unless it was a menace. Today, many of the property’s enormous oaks still stand, along with the DeVries family burial plot.   The Panella family arrived in the region in 1936, and began an agricultural journey that ultimately culminated with the purchase of Oak Farm in 2004. As a third generation California Farmer, Dan reveled in undertaking the task of replanting the property’s 60 acres of vineyards in 2012 to fufill the vast potential of Lodi. Dan leads a talented team of agricultural specialists to build a diverse portfolio of wines made from estate fruit and selectively sourced grapes. Please join us on April 9th and meet Dan Panella!  He will teach us all about the history of their Lodi Estate while guiding us through a tasting of his classic wines.

Virtual Tasting with Burly Winery Owner Hank McCrorie on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 6:30pm Eastern Time

Burly wine tasting

We are elated to launch the 2018 Burly Cabernets with a Virtual Tasting event!  We have done wine dinners and in-store wine tastings with Hank from Burly for years, and this Covid-style virtual tasting will be heart-warming and memorable.  The perfect way to break in his new vintages! Hank McCrorie's Burly Wines have a HUGE following in Raleigh, and it's not just because he's a North Carolina native and part time resident.  His Napa Cabernets and Chardonnay are impeccably crafted and delectable.  Hank is full of wonderful stories and is an absolute delight.  We're sure you'll love him as much as you do his wines.
