The 2021 M. Étain is a premium, estate-grown Napa Valley red blend produced by the legendary Scarecrow Wine winery from fruit hand-harvested entirely at the JJ Cohn Estate in the Rutherford AVA. Winemaker Celia Welch notes that this vintage represents a distinct expression of the vineyard rather than a declassified version of the flagship Scarecrow bottling. The 2021 variety composition features a classic Bordeaux-style blend consisting of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, 11% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. On the nose, the wine delivers complex, highly expressive aromas of wild blueberries, black cherry, fresh sage, lavender, and tobacco, grounded by rich undertones of oak, caramel, dark chocolate, and deep loamy earth. Upon entry, the medium-to-full-bodied palate is immediately dominated by bright, juicy raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors supported by a velvety, concentrated texture. The finish is remarkably fresh, elegant, and persistent, with fine-grained, dusty tannins playing a subtle, complementary role that allows the vibrant red and blue fruit expressions to linger gracefully.
