Pietrame Montepulciano D'Abruzzo
Tasting Notes
Pietrame Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a bold, energetic red wine crafted from 100% estate-grown Montepulciano grapes indigenous to the rugged hills of Italy's central eastern Abruzzo region. Produced by the renowned Cantina Tollo cooperative, the standard "spring" expression is kept unoaked and refined in stainless steel vats for up to twelve months to capture the grape's pure, vibrant varietal characteristics. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color flashing brilliant violet reflections. The wine opens with a highly expressive bouquet featuring prominent aromas of wild cherry, fresh plum, and dark woodland berries, beautifully complexed by delicate notes of earthy violets, peppery spice, and subtle hints of cocoa. On the palate, it delivers a full-bodied yet remarkably well-structured profile where rich flavors of juicy blackberry, licorice, and savory herbs roll over a core of vibrant, mouth-watering acidity. The finish is remarkably smooth, sustained by gentle, tightly coiled tannins that cleanly wash the palate without feeling overly heavy.
Thanks to this robust structure and high natural acidity, this wine is exceptionally food-friendly and shines alongside hearty, savory Italian cuisine. It perfectly cuts through the fat and richness of heavy, tomato-based dishes like baked lasagna layered with extra cheese, meat-lover's pizza, and eggplant parmigiana. The wine's earthy and peppery undertones also complement smoky, charred proteins straight from the barbecue, making it an excellent companion for grilled Italian fennel sausages with peppers, thick burgers, and roasted lamb chops. For simpler arrangements, it pairs beautifully with cured charcuterie boards and semi-mature to hard cheeses like Parmesan, Asiago, or Pecorino.
