Orin Swift 2024 8 Years in the Desert

Tasting Notes

The 2024 Orin Swift 8 Years in the Desert is a bold, powerful, and full-bodied California red blend crafted by winemaker Dave Phinney, meticulously composed of 60% Zinfandel, 28% Petite Sirah, 7% Syrah, and 5% other red varietals. Sourced from premium vineyards across California—including Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley and the historic Monte Rosso vineyard—this 15.4% ABV wine matures for eight months in French oak (32% new) to achieve its signature rich profile. Visually, the wine commands attention with an opaque mauve core that transitions to a vivid fuchsia rim as it coats the glass.
On the nose, it opens with dense, perfumed aromatics reminiscent of a black plum and boysenberry galette, layered with notes of Tellicherry peppercorn, ripe raspberry, cedar, stone fruit, and musk. The palate enters with a taut yet supple texture, exuding deep flavors of wild blackberry, crispy pluot, dark chocolate, a hint of fennel, and slate. It concludes with a mouthwatering balance and pleasing texture, where soft framing tannins smoothly dissolve into an indulgent finish of milk chocolate-covered raspberry and espresso.
Given its immense power, structural complexity, and high alcohol content, this robust blend demands bold, highly flavorful food pairings that can seamlessly match its intensity. It pairs exceptionally well with rich, heavy meats, making a grilled ribeye steak, braised short ribs, or roasted lamb chops ideal centerpieces to balance the wine's firm tannins. The dark fruit flavors and black pepper spice notes also elegantly complement hearty, slow-cooked stews, rich pasta dishes featuring deeply simmered meat sauces, and a selection of aged, sharp cheeses. For the optimal tasting experience, serve the wine at 60–65°F (15–18°C) and decant it for 30 to 60 minutes before drinking to allow its intricate layers of oak, spice, and dark fruit to fully open up.
