Mt. Brave 2021 Mt. Veeder Merlot

Tasting Notes

Mt. Brave’s 2021 Mt. Veeder Merlot is a powerful, high‑altitude expression of the variety, and it shows the unmistakable structure and tension that come from the rugged, low‑yielding slopes of Mt. Veeder. The wine is composed almost entirely of Merlot with small supporting percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec depending on the final blend, all sourced from vineyards sitting between roughly 1,400 and 1,800 feet. The growing conditions on Mt. Veeder—thin volcanic soils, steep exposures, persistent winds, and cooler daytime highs—produce berries with thick skins, naturally low vigor, and concentrated phenolics. In the glass, the 2021 vintage opens with deep aromas of black cherry, plum compote, blueberry skin, graphite, cocoa powder, and dried sage. The palate is dense yet lifted, showing dark berry fruit, blackcurrant, espresso, violet, and mountain herbs wrapped in firm but polished tannins. The acidity is vibrant for Merlot, giving the wine a long, mineral‑driven finish that reflects its mountain origin.

This Merlot pairs beautifully with dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth. Braised short ribs, grilled lamb chops, herb‑crusted pork tenderloin, and mushroom risotto all complement its dark fruit and savory undertones. Aged cheeses such as Manchego, Comté, or a firm cheddar also work well, as do dishes featuring rosemary, thyme, or truffle. The wine’s acidity and tannin profile make it especially well-suited to richer preparations, roasted meats, and earthy flavors.
