The 2018 La Pelle Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is a beautifully composed wine crafted by Maayan Koschitzky, who brings experience from legendary estates like Screaming Eagle and Atelier Melka. In the glass, it presents a deep, almost opaque ruby-purple hue. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with aromas of cassis, black cherry cordial, and chocolate-covered currants. These evolve into more savory and complex notes of Turkish coffee, graphite, and faint leather, accented by hints of anise and, with some air, dark rose petals, wet stone, and forest floor. On the palate, it's polished and plush, with a vibrant mineral edge that cuts through flavors of black and red currants, dark chocolate, steeped tea, and exotic spices. The acidity is bright yet integrated, the tannins are fine-grained and firm, and the finish persists for over half a minute, leaving a graceful impression. Aged for 21 months in mostly new French oak and sourced from premium sites like Alluvium, Ceniza, and Red Hen, this Reserve bottling has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over the next two decades.
