Frecciarossa 2025 Oltrepo Pavese Pinot Grigio
Situated in the rolling hills of Casteggio within Lombardy's historic Oltrepò Pavese, Frecciarossa stands as a benchmark for artisan, estate-grown Italian winemaking. Founded in 1919 by Mario Odero and guided today by his great-granddaughter Valeria Radici Odero, the estate carries more than a century of uninterrupted family stewardship. Its name comes from the local dialect fraccia rossa, or "red landslide," a nod to the iron-rich red clay beneath the vines. Farming certified organic vineyards at the 45th parallel, the team prioritizes soil health and natural biodiversity to capture the true character of their northern Italian terroir. Spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and gentle handling in the cellar let each vintage express pure varietal personality without heavy-handed intervention.
Forget everything you think you know about Pinot Grigio. Frecciarossa's PG is the real thing: crisp, textured and full of personality. A warm, sunny summer in the Oltrepò Pavese was balanced by cool nights, so the grapes reached full ripeness while keeping their bright, mouthwatering acidity. In the glass it shows a faint glint of copper, a quiet reminder that Pinot Grigio is a pink-skinned grape. Aromas of white peach and ripe pear lead to flavors of Bosc pear, toasted almond and a zesty streak of grapefruit, finishing dry with a saline, almost seaside snap. The winemaking is pure and simple: wild yeasts, no malolactic fermentation (so the acidity stays bright and lively) and six months in stainless steel to keep the fruit front and center. Very low sulfur and moderate alcohol make it a natural partner for fried calamari, clams, risotto or a sunny afternoon.
