Tasting Notes

The Durigutti 2024 Proyecto Las Compuertas Criolla Chica is a vibrant, organic red wine crafted by brothers Héctor and Pablo Durigutti at their Finca Victoria estate in the prestigious Las Compuertas GI of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. This wine highlights the unique Criolla Chica varietal (historically known as Mission in the United States, País in Chile, and Listán Prieto in Spain), a heritage grape planted by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century long before Malbec arrived. Sourced from a small plot of historic vines planted in 1943 and fermented using native yeasts in concrete eggs, this light-bodied wine exhibits a beautiful, low-intensity ruby red hue. On the nose, it offers an expressive and delicate bouquet bursting with fresh strawberries, tart cherries, quince, and subtle floral notes like violet, accented by a hint of peppery spice. The mouthfeel is bone-dry, vertical, and exceptionally refreshing, characterized by crisp, mid-to-high acidity, minimal tannins, and a clean, long-lasting finish that reflects its old-world, terroir-driven style. Often described as a fantastic Argentinian alternative to a high-quality Beaujolais or a light Old World Pinot Noir, this low-intervention "glou-glou" wine is best served with a light chill.

Because of its bright acidity, low tannins, and delicate red fruit profile, this wine makes for an incredibly versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with light, casual fare such as artisanal bread and cheese boards—especially featuring soft cheeses like goat cheese or brie—as well as charcuterie, savory empanadas, and grilled vegetables. Its refreshing structure cut through the oils of brick-oven pizzas, simple tomato-based pasta dishes, and roasted chicken, while also matching up perfectly with lighter proteins like grilled salmon or seared tuna.
