Domaine Marie Be'renice 2021 Bandol Rouge
Tasting Notes
The 2021 Domaine Marie Bérénice Bandol Rouge is a structured yet surprisingly approachable organic red wine crafted by winemaker Damien Roux in Provence, France. Built on a classic regional foundation, this vintage is a blend of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache harvested by hand from old vines rooted in clay and limestone terraces. In the glass, the wine displays a deep, brooding character balanced by an unexpected grace. It leads with a complex, savory nose of cedar box, leather, tobacco, and baking spices like clove and cinnamon. On the palate, a long maceration and 18 months of aging in large oak barrels deliver dense, powerful tannins alongside a vibrant core of dark and red fruits, including blackberry, cassis, blueberry, and tart cranberry, all lifted by subtle notes of violet and licorice.
To balance the wine's rich profile and prominent tannins, the ideal food pairings focus on hearty, savory proteins and earthy textures. It pairs exceptionally well with classic Provençal dishes like grilled lamb chops encrusted with rosemary, slow-cooked beef stew, and wild game meats. The robust framework of the Mourvèdre also cuts cleanly through the fat of grilled burgers or a creamy risotto topped with steak tips. For a cheese course, it pairs beautifully with aged, hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego, while an adventurous dessert pairing can include dark chocolate to complement the wine's baking spice and dark fruit finish.
