Tasting Notes
David & Nadia 2024 "Topography" Pinotage is an elegant, minimal-intervention red wine that serves as a definitive example of South Africa’s "New Wave" wine movement. Crafted by the husband-and-wife team David and Nadia Sadie in the Swartland region, this wine redefines Pinotage—a unique crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault—by prioritizing purity, freshness, and linear energy over rustic weight. The grapes are sourced from dry-farmed bush vines planted in 1991 and 1998, rooted in the decomposed granite soils of the Paardeberg mountain slopes. The winemakers apply a delicate Burgundian-style approach, utilizing 20% whole-bunch fermentation in concrete and large foudres to preserve the fruit's integrity. On the nose, the wine reveals an enticing bouquet of red currants, juicy cranberry, wild raspberry, and fragrant cherry, accented by hints of black pepper, green fennel, and subtle wood notes. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant and punchy, offering crunchy red fruits balanced by fine, grippy tannins, a precise granite-driven minerality, and a long, savory finish. Its exceptional freshness and bright acidity allow it to pair seamlessly with grilled lamb chops seasoned with Ras el Hanout, slow-cooked pulled pork, smoked duck, or a rich mushroom risotto.
