1. Gagnon-Kennedy 2022 Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet

This is a passion project from winemaker Marc Gagnon, known for his tenure at prestigious estates like Screaming Eagle. Gagnon-Kennedy focuses on expressing the character of historic sites, and this Cabernet is a pure reflection of the legendary Monte Rosso Vineyard in the Moon Mountain District of Sonoma. Famed for its high elevation, rugged terrain, and distinct iron-rich red volcanic soils, this site—which includes vines planted in the 1940s—yields deeply concentrated fruit. The 2022 vintage is a dark, brooding, and potent wine, offering intense aromas of blackcurrant and wild blackberry mingled with savory notes of volcanic earth and crushed herbs, promising decades of enjoyment.

2. McCrorie Family Vineyards 2019 Burly Special Selection Coombsville Cabernet

Burly Wines is the brand of McCrorie Family Vineyards, dedicated to crafting high-quality, expressive Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville AVA. Owner and NC native Hank McCrorie is a minor celebrity around these parts and his Special Selection Cabernet is always a major hit at his yearly winemaker dinners with us.  As Napa Valley’s southernmost AVA, Coombsville benefits from a cooler climate, allowing for slower ripening and greater retention of vibrant acidity and savory minerality. This "Special Selection" 2019 bottling showcases the region's elegance, offering intense aromas of cassis and blackberries seamlessly integrated with notes of pomegranate and anise. It is noted for its velvety, intense mouthfeel and deep, coating tannins, which provide beautiful structure and make it cellar-worthy.

3. Trujillo Wines 2017 Four Brothers Vineyard Cabernet

This powerful yet balanced Cabernet is crafted by Michael Trujillo, a Napa Valley veteran with decades of winemaking experience, ensuring a focus on complexity and ageability. While the specific "Four Brothers Vineyard" remains under wraps, the wine clearly benefits from the pedigree of top Napa sites, exhibiting the richness of the valley floor alongside the structure of mountain fruit. The 2017 vintage expresses tremendous depth and finesse, delivering forward, bold aromatics of black cherry and dark currants, concentrated with hints of cola, sweet cedar, and lively spice. The palate is rich, balanced by a velvety texture and a long, lingering finish. Michael made just 82 cases of this amazing Cabernet!

4. Mending Wall 2022 Tournahu Vineyard Cabernet

Mending Wall is a boutique collaboration between accomplished winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and several industry veterans, with a philosophy centered on minimal intervention. This wine is sourced from the esteemed Tournahu Vineyard just north of St. Helena, characterized by rocky soils and exceptional drainage which deliver powerful fruit combined with bright acidity. The 2022 is a bold, structured, and concentrated wine with a mix of black fruit, tobacco, and chocolate aromas. Critics praise its velvet-like texture and a creosote-like minerality in the mid-palate, making it thrilling to drink now or cellar.

5. Fess Parker 2018 Addendum Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet

Although the Fess Parker name is famous for Santa Barbara wines, their Addendum label is exclusively dedicated to creating top-tier, single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley's most famous sites. This selection comes from the legendary Stagecoach Vineyard, a rugged mountainside site high on the Vaca Range. Its high elevation and shallow, rocky soils produce concentrated, small-berried fruit ideal for a powerful, firm, and age-worthy mountain Cabernet. The 2018 is a classic expression, with a complex bouquet of concentrated dark fruits interwoven with savory notes of cedar, tobacco, and crushed rock. Its high quality is recognized by critics, including 94 Points from Jeb Dunnuck and 93 Points from Wine Spectator.

6. Rodney Strong Vineyards 2018 Rockaway Vineyard Cabernet

Rodney Strong Vineyards is a pioneer in Sonoma County, recognized for sustainable farming and crafting wines that clearly express their regional identity. This wine is a single-vineyard bottling from Rockaway, a site in the Alexander Valley that rises up to 750 feet in elevation. The vineyard's gravelly clay and fractured sandstone subsoil produce small, concentrated clusters, resulting in a Cabernet with mountain-grown intensity. The 2018 is a bold, rich, and structured wine, offering concentrated flavors of dark plum and red currant, layered with earthy notes of tobacco, leather, and baking spices.  93 Points from Wine Enthusiast.
