Bodegas El Nido 2021 El Nido Jumilla Red
Tasting Notes
The 2021 Bodegas El Nido 'El Nido' Jumilla Red is a highly concentrated, icon-level Spanish red blend crafted by renowned winemaker Chris Ringland in the Valle de La Aragona. This prestigious vintage is composed of a precise varietal blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell (Mourvèdre), sourced from a mix of 30-year-old Cabernet vines and incredibly old, ungrafted Monastrell vines. Aged for 22 to 24 months in a combination of new French and American oak barrels, the wine displays a glass-coating, deep opaque purple-red hue. On the expressive nose, it reveals forward, heady aromas of blackcurrant, boysenberry, and ripe black cherry reduction, intricately woven with sweet spices, violets, cocoa, and a hint of smoky tobacco. The palate is big, rich, and full-bodied, carrying its 15.5% to 16% alcohol with exceptional, velvety integration. It delivers an opulent layer of spiced plum, licorice strap, Earl Grey tea, and mineral undertones, all framed by elegant, muscular tannins and a persistent, savory finish.Due to its intense power, deep tannic structure, and monumental density, this Jumilla red demands robust, high-flavor food pairings that can seamlessly match its profile. It pairs divinely with premium cuts of heavily marbled red meat, such as a grilled Wagyu or Kobe beef fillet served with a rich red wine reduction. The wine's savory undercurrents of tree bark and medicinal herbs also make it an extraordinary companion for roasted wild game, such as a roasted saddle of venison with lingonberry sauce or a slow-simmered wild boar stew. For a more traditional approach, a rack of lamb roasted with rosemary and Provence herbs balances the wine's bold oak profile beautifully. Finally, to complement the lingering, earthy finish, pair it alongside extra-aged hard cheeses like old Comté, intense Pecorino Sardo, or a truffle-infused cheese that can gracefully cut through the wine's powerful tannins.
