Bodegas Cerro Chapeu Castel-Pujol 2026 "Folklore" Naranja
Tasting Notes
The Bodegas Cerro Chapeu Castel-Pujol 2026 "Folklore" Naranja is a vibrant, low-intervention skin-contact orange wine crafted by 10th-generation winemaker Pia Carrau in the Rivera region of Uruguay. This expressive vintage is a unique blend composed of 90% Trebbiano and 10% Petit Manseng, where the Trebbiano juice undergoes an extended 90-day (three-month) maceration directly on its own skins alongside the Petit Manseng skins. Fermented with native yeasts and bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur additions, it pours a beautiful light-orange, amber hue in the glass. On the nose, it opens with an intriguing aromatic profile of grapefruit, stone fruits like white peach and nectarine, jasmine, and a rustic touch of candied ginger and incense. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied and wildly approachable, balancing lush flavors of apricot, bitter orange zest, and chamomile tea against a refreshing, laser-focused acidity and a distinct, stony mineral finish. The extensive skin contact imparts a soft, gripping tannic structure that provides excellent texture without causing heaviness.
Thanks to this structural grip and lively acidity, this orange wine is incredibly food-friendly and versatile. It acts as a fantastic aperitif alongside a mature cheese board or charcuterie spread. For a main course, its savory undertones and bright citrus profile seamlessly cut through richer seafood options, making it a perfect match for a hearty seafood casserole, pan-roasted white fish, or Mediterranean appetizers. It also stands up beautifully to traditional Uruguayan dishes and lighter wood-fired fare.
