Tasting Notes
Blandy's 5 Year Old Verdelho Medium Dry Madeira is a fortified wine crafted from the Verdelho grape, a white varietal grown on the northern terraces of Madeira Island—primarily in Ponta Delgada and São Vicente—at altitudes up to 1,300 feet. This location yields a grape that retains vibrant, high acidity while developing slightly more body and texture than its drier counterpart, Sercial. Aged for five years using the traditional canteiro system of gradual cask heating in warm lodges, the wine pours a clear, bright topaz color with a distinctive golden rim. The nose offers a complex, fresh bouquet of raisins, dried fruits, candied citrus, wood, and sweet baking spices. On the palate, it delivers a medium-dry profile that masterfully balances a tangy, mouthwatering acidity with an inviting sweetness. Layered flavors of dried apricot, honey, toffee, ginger, and subtle hazelnut roll into a long, crisp finish.
Due to its balanced, off-dry structure, this versatile Madeira serves beautifully as a lightly chilled aperitif alongside toasted almonds, olives, and semi-cured cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. It has the unique ability to cut through rich, savory textures, making it an exceptional partner for wild mushroom dishes, game pâtés, foie gras, and cured meats like Serrano ham. Furthermore, it pairs famously with cream-based or heavy soups, such as tomato bisque, crab chowder, and classic consommé. On the table, it holds up excellently against roasted poultry, grilled seafood, or light curries. Finally, it transitions effortlessly into a companion for fruit-based desserts like almond tarts or caramel pudding.
