Biale 2023 R.W. Moore Vineyard Zinfandel

Tasting Notes

Biale’s 2023 R.W. Moore Vineyard Zinfandel shows the vineyard’s signature mix of old‑vine depth and vibrant Napa Valley fruit. Made entirely from Zinfandel sourced from the historic R.W. Moore Vineyard in Coombsville—planted in the early 1900s—this bottling leans into the varietal’s classic dark‑berry richness while preserving the site’s natural acidity and spice. The nose opens with concentrated aromas of blackberry compote, black cherry, raspberry liqueur, and warm baking spices, layered with hints of cocoa, dried rose petal, and cracked pepper. The palate is plush yet structured, delivering waves of ripe boysenberry, plum, and blueberry alongside notes of anise, clove, and dusty earth. Fine, velvety tannins frame the wine, while a bright, energetic core keeps the finish long, lifted, and slightly savory, showing touches of tobacco leaf and dark chocolate.

This Zinfandel pairs beautifully with dishes that echo its richness and spice—slow‑braised short ribs, grilled lamb chops, barbecue pork shoulder, or herb‑rubbed roast chicken. It also complements wood‑fired pizzas with fennel sausage, mushroom ragù, or aged cheeses such as Manchego, Pecorino, or sharp cheddar. The wine’s acidity and spice make it especially good with smoky or charred preparations.

Critical Acclaim

97 Points from Wine Advocate

95 Points from Vinous

93 Points from Wine Spectator

The 2023 Robert Biale R.W. Moore Vineyard Zinfandel has received widespread critical acclaim, earning a spectacular 97 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Reviewer Joe Czerwinski praised its exotic aromas of peppered stone fruit, describing the medium- to full-bodied red as a "must-try wine" framed by plenty of silky tannins that linger elegantly on the finish. Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media awarded the vintage 95 points, noting that the historic Coombsville site produces a wine that "oozes character," packed with masculine intensity, black fruit, graphite, leather, incense, and dried herbs. He noted its firm structure and suggested giving it a year or two in the cellar to soften up. Additionally,  Wine Spectator gave it 93 points, describing it as brambly yet tightly focused with deep blackberry profiles, grilled anise, and savory cracked pepper that build tension toward medium-grained tannins.
