Winemaker Notes
Not only is this one of the most delicious Grenaches we've tasted recently, it also one of the rarest. Less than 170 cases (2000 bottles) were made for the 2021 vintage and given how great it is, it is hard to believe that this is only the 3rd vintage.
This amazing wine comes from the island of Capraia (population 400), a small 40 sq km island north-west of Elba, halfway between Elba and and Corsica. The husband and wife team of Francesco and Gianna are joined by Francesco's father (the island's baker) in tending the vineyards that the couple planted on the terraced slopes of the island. Capraia is a former penal colony and until the 1980's the terraces were farmed by the inmates. The land was fallow until Francesco returned home with wife and kids in tow.
The project caught the attention of renowned winemaker Emiliano Falsini and he makes the wine that from the Alicante grapes (Grenache) that the couple have managed to lovingly coaxed from harsh, windswept vineyard.
The luxurious 2021 "Sulana" Costa Toscna Alicante emerges from the glass with graceful nose full of fresh raspberry, cherry, and strawberry aromas, accompanied by subtle hints of garrigue, rose petal, and violets. The palate incorporates everything sensed in the aromatic and much more. Medium-plus body and intensity the fruit and spice dance across your tongue, backed by soft, integrated tannins and bright acidity. Currently the finish is long and lingering with youthful enthusiasm but anticipate interesting development curve if you can keep your hands off for a few years.
