Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Dry Riesling
Tasting Notes
Pewsey Vale Vineyard has operated as a mono-varietal estate since its replanting in the 1960s, establishing a remarkably consistent house style that serves as a benchmark for Eden Valley Riesling. This high-altitude site, sitting at approximately 500 meters, produces a wine defined by its linear precision and structural tension, typically presenting a pale straw color with distinct green hues in its youth.
The aromatic profile is characterized by an intense core of citrus, specifically lime zest and lemon pulp, interwoven with notes of white flowers like jasmine and Frangipani. A hallmark of this estate is a persistent savory undertone of fine dried herbs and fresh rosemary, which provides a counterpoint to the fruit. On the palate, the wine is bone-dry and light-to-medium bodied, showcasing a distinctive mineral backbone often described as crushed stone, flint, or talc. While the acidity is bracing and mouth-watering, it is balanced by a subtle phenolic weight and a hint of tropical fruit, such as pineapple or guava, which emerges in the mid-palate.
As the wine transitions from its youthful primary state into maturity, the profile shifts toward more complex secondary characters. After five to ten years of bottle age, the fresh lime softens into lime marmalade and lemon curd, accompanied by the development of toasted brioche, honey, and the classic "petrol" or kerosene notes associated with aged Riesling. The mineral edge remains but becomes more integrated, evolving into a saline, waxy texture that extends the finish significantly.
