Taylor's 2023 Rocking Chair Red

$ 7499

The 2023 vintage in Napa Valley is being heralded as a modern classic and one of the best in the last 30 years, defined by a long, cool growing season that allowed for remarkable hang time without the typical heat spikes of late summer. This resulted in fruit with immense structural integrity and vibrant acidity. For this Taylor's private label selection, winemaker Keith Emerson has utilized a blend of Cabernet Franc from Blackbird and Cabernet Sauvignon from the T. Gary Rogers vineyard, two sites that offer a fascinating study in contrasts. Emerson, known for his precision at Vineyard 29 and Vineyard 36, is an expert at balancing the "iron fist in a velvet glove" style, and with only two barrels produced, this wine represents an incredibly focused expression of that philosophy.

The Cabernet Franc from Blackbird brings a sophisticated, aromatic lift to the wine. In a cool year like 2023, this site yields fruit with high-toned notes of crushed violets, pencil shavings, and a distinct red-fruit energy. There is a plushness to the mid-palate that is characteristic of Blackbird fruit, providing a seamless bridge between the aromatics and the structure. This softens the edges of the Cabernet Sauvignon while adding a layer of herbal complexity—think bay leaf and dried sage—that elevates the wine beyond simple fruit density.

The backbone of the blend comes from the T. Gary Rogers vineyard, a source known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon with significant gravitas and mountain-inflected intensity. The fruit here typically leans toward the darker end of the spectrum, offering concentrated flavors of crème de cassis, black cherry, and a hint of damp earth. Because of the extended ripening period in 2023, the tannins from this site are likely exceptionally fine-grained but still carry the broad-shouldered architecture required for long-term aging.

In the glass, you should expect a wine of deep purple hue with an explosive nose of blue and black fruits interlaced with the savory, floral hallmarks of top-tier Cabernet Franc. Keith Emerson’s signature is visible in the wine’s textural elegance; despite the natural power of the TRG fruit, the palate should remain light on its feet due to the vintage’s natural acidity. The finish will likely be punctuated by notes of mocha and toasted spice from the barrel regime, lingering with a persistent mineral grip.
