Fraga do Corvo Monterrei Godello Sobre Lias
While Albariño often steals the spotlight among Galician whites, Godello stands as northwestern Spain's hidden gem, celebrated for its unique ability to marry rich texture with piercing mineral freshness. Often described as an ideal middle ground for lovers of crisp Pinot Grigio and broader, textured Chardonnay, Godello offers the vibrant orchard fruit and zesty drive of the former alongside the mid-palate weight, roundness, and age-worthy complexity of the latter. It is a versatile, serious white grape that brings both structural power and elegance to the table.
In the inland hills of Monterrei, Fraga do Corvo—a project under the Grandes Pagos Gallegos banner—focuses on expressing the pure terroir of native Galician varieties. Named after a nearby oak forest inhabited by local crows, the estate relies on hillside vineyards where warm daytime sun and cool mountain nights allow Godello to achieve complete phenolic ripeness while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Winemaker José Manuel Martínez Juste gives the wine three months of aging on its fine lees (sobre lías) in stainless steel tanks, building remarkable mouthfeel and complexity without masking the fruit with oak.
The Fraga do Corvo Godello Sobre Lías leads with an inviting bouquet of crisp green apple, white peach, lime zest, and subtle blossoms of jasmine and mimosa. The palate is unctuous and enveloping, offering a satiny mid-palate texture that is immediately balanced by bright, refreshing acidity and an undercurrent of crushed granite minerality. The finish is long, clean, and beautifully structured, making it an outstanding partner for roasted poultry, seared scallops, or creamy seafood dishes.
