South American Sampler #2 - Argentinian Reds

Argentina offers a landscape of viticultural diversity that extends far beyond the common expectations of the region. While Malbec remains the undisputed champion, the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza and the windswept plains of Patagonia provide ideal conditions for a wide array of varietals. This April sampler explores that versatility, moving from the refined and spicy Cabernet Franc of Agrelo to the surprisingly fresh, maritime-influenced Pinot Noir of the deep south. Each selection represents a commitment to site-specific winemaking, showcasing how elevation, soil composition, and cooling southern winds can transform traditional grapes into elegant, world-class expressions.

This Sampler Includes

Graffito 2021 Cabernet Franc (Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo) Winemaker Jimena Lopez sources this fruit from 30-year-old vineyards planted in the clay and loam soils of Agrelo. The wine spent 15 months in second and third-use French oak barrels, resulting in a balanced and elegant profile. It leads with floral aromas and distinct notes of raspberry, red cherry, and sweet red pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with polished tannins and a characteristic spice that provides excellent structure.  

Ver Sacrum 2023 Monastrell (Los Chacayes, Uco Valley) Produced from a single vineyard in the high-altitude Los Chacayes region, this 100% Monastrell undergoes a semi-carbonic maceration before aging on its lees in concrete eggs. The nose is bright and expressive, showing sweet black cherry, cocoa, and an intriguing herbal, balsamic undertone. It is lean and lightly grippy on the palate, offering precision and clarity with flavors of dried leaves and tobacco.  

Familia Zuccardi 2022 "Emma" Bonarda (Uco Valley) A tribute to the family matriarch, this Bonarda is sourced from high-elevation sites in Paraje Altamira and San Pablo. It is fermented and aged entirely in concrete vats to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine is purple-hued and vibrant, featuring aromas of tea, raspberry sorbet, and black plum. On the palate, it is juicy and precise with a chalky texture and lively acidity that elevates the concentrated red fruit flavors.  

Saurus 2022 "Barrel Fermented" Pinot Noir (Neuquén, Patagonia) This Pinot Noir comes from the cool, windy climate of San Patricio del Chañar in Patagonia. The wine is fermented in oak barrels, which adds a layer of complexity and texture to the naturally bright fruit. It displays aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and delicate rose petals, framed by subtle toasty notes and vanilla. The palate is elegant and fresh, characterized by soft tannins and a persistent finish that highlights the finesse of southern Argentine viticulture. 

Mendel 2022 Malbec (Lujan de Cuyo) Crafted by Roberto de la Mota from ungrafted vines planted in 1928, this Malbec represents the classic, sturdy style of Mayor Drummond. It leads with a dark-fruited bouquet of black cherry, plum, and violet, accented by graphite and dark chocolate. The wine is full-bodied and dense, yet it maintains a remarkable balance with fine-grained tannins and a layered finish of roasted herbs and mint. 

El Enemigo 2023 Malbec (Gualtallary, Uco Valley) Hailing from high-altitude vineyards at nearly 4,800 feet, this blend includes 10% Cabernet Franc and was fermented with whole clusters. The resulting wine is rich and concentrated, displaying aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and tarragon. The palate is fluid and seamless, moving into a savory, earth-tinged finish with grippy, refined tannins. It is a mineral and stony expression that perfectly captures the intensity of the Gualtallary terroir.
