Les Carrieres de Mezy 2023 Cuvee De La Reserve Pouilly-Fume

$ 2299 $ 2999

Les Carrières de Mézy is a Loire Valley estate quietly making some of the most character‑driven Sauvignon Blanc in Pouilly‑Fumé — and priced so inexpensively for Pouilly-Fume that it might cause one to hesitate.

The domaine works with quality‑focused growers across Pouilly‑Fumé, selecting parcels from the region’s most expressive soils: flint clay, Kimmeridgian marl studded with fossilized oysters, and the pale calcareous caillotes that give Sauvignon Blanc its signature lift and minerality. These are the same geological building blocks that make Sancerre famous, but on the Pouilly side of the river they often yield wines with a slightly deeper fruit core and that unmistakable hint of “fumé” smokiness.

What makes Mézy compelling is its philosophy: careful vineyard selection, slow cold fermentation, and patient élevage that emphasizes purity rather than flash. Fermentation happens at cool temperatures (15–20°C), preserving aromatics and texture; the team then tastes through the lots, blending for balance before clarifying and bottling at the domaine. This is not mass‑market Sauvignon Blanc — it’s thoughtful, small‑production Loire winemaking that aims to express terroir rather than chase trends.

This Pouilly-Fumé opens with an intense and layered bouquet of tart citrus, ripe white peach, and dried chamomile, framed by the classic stony minerality the appellation is known for. A delicate lift of acacia flower adds a floral note on the nose before the wine moves into a bright, generously ripe palate, where flavors of macerated white peach, poached pear, and a whisper of nutmeg spice unfold. A touch of softness on the entry gives way to vibrant, mineral-driven freshness through the midpalate, finishing crisp, clean, and lingering.
