J. Mourat "Collection" Vin de France Rouge

$ 1599 $ 1999

The Mourats have long history in gastronomic life of their corner of the Loire Valley.  Before the Mourat family ever made wine, they were salt makers on the Île de Ré, later becoming wine merchants in Sables d'Olonne in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1974 that Jean Mourat put down roots as a grower himself, purchasing Château Marie du Fou in the village of Mareuil, in the Loire's little-known, westernmost corner called the Fiefs Vendéens. His son Jérémie took over the estate in 2000 and has spent the years since converting the vineyards to organic farming while working tirelessly to raise the profile of this overlooked coastal appellation, just an hour south of Nantes and only twenty kilometers from the Atlantic. That maritime proximity is what makes these wines special: cooling ocean breezes and a rare mix of volcanic and schist soils give the fruit a freshness and energy you don't often find elsewhere in the Loire.

The J. Mourat Collection Rouge is a juicy, fruit-forward field blend generally consisting of equal parts Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Cabernet Franc. It avoids the harsh green, vegetal notes sometimes associated with the region, offering an inviting bouquet of fresh red cherry, wild raspberry skin, cranberry, and violet, accented by a hint of thyme and crushed stones. Medium-bodied and lively, its palate reveals tart cherry and red currant framed by silky tannins, balanced acidity, and a touch of peppery spice. Best enjoyed with a slight chill to make the bright red fruits pop, it pairs wonderfully with roast chicken, mushroom tarts, grilled burgers, and cured meats.
