The 2014 R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is a masterclass in traditional, old-school Spanish winemaking. This vintage is crafted from a classic Rioja Alta blend composed of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho (Garnacha), and a remaining 5% split between Graciano and Mazuelo. True to the uncompromising style of Bodegas R. López de Heredia, the wine underwent an extraordinary eight years of aging in old oak vats and well-seasoned American oak barrels before release, lending it a beautifully evolved character.
In the glass, it shows a vibrant ruby-red hue that softens into amber edges. The bouquet is complex and tertiary, revealing layers of dried cherries, strawberries, and orange peel seamlessly interwoven with notes of sweet tobacco, leather, cedar, and a subtle touch of vanilla and coconut from the American oak. On the palate, the wine delivers a striking balance of power and weightless elegance; it is very dry and medium-bodied, driven by a racy, citrus-like acidity and fine-boned, silky tannins that give way to a long, savory, and beautifully sustained finish.
Given its lively acidity and deeply savory profile, this classic red Rioja pairs phenomenally well with rich, rustic meats. Its absolute benchmark match is roasted or grilled lamb—particularly a leg of lamb seasoned with rosemary, garlic, and anchovies. The wine's vibrant acidity cuts effortlessly through the fat of suckling pig, braised beef, or grilled pork chops, while its earthiness beautifully highlights traditional Spanish tapas like jamón Ibérico, chorizo, and well-aged Manchego cheese.
