South American Sampler #1 - Favorites from Cory's Mendoza Trip
$142 Value for just $109

Cory just got back from a visit to Argentina's Mendoza wine region with Florencio Navarro, owner of The Artisan Collection Wine Imports.  It was a fantastic trip featuring some really great, small, family owned wineries and these were some of Cory's favorite wines from the trip.

Sampler includes one bottle each:

Durigutti "Cara Sucia" Blanco Legitimo - Son of Italian imigrants, Hector Durigutti started with nothing, scrubbing winery floors in his teens at one of Argentina's big wineries and now with his brother Pablo, owns one of the true gems of Argentinian boutique winemaking.
Their Cara Sucia line pays homage to the Rivadavia District of Mendoza, where the Durigutti brothers were born.  Co-fermented in concrete eggs, it is a field blend of organically farmed Palomino, Pedro Ximénez, Ugniblanc, Chenin, Moscatel Amarillo, & Sauvignonese grapes.  Fresh, crisp, hints of granny smith apple and pomelo with hints of fresh aromatic herbals. Refreshing, smooth and silky and ONLY 300 cases made!

Durigutti "Proyecto Las Compuertas" Criolla -  Criolla is a underappreciated varietal (sometimes known as Mission) that Durigutti is producing a fantastic wine from.  The Proyecto Las Compuertas line features wines grown on their winery estate in the Las Compuertas area of Mendoza.  These are some of the oldest vines on the estate, planted in 1943.
Ruby red, bright and low intensity red wine with reddish
highlights. On nose, it is fruity with notes of strawberries, quince, cherries and fresh plums, as well as freshly pressed grapes. The mouth-feel is dry and refreshing. It flows leaving a tasty and balanced sensation in the mouth. Medium-bodied, with pleasant tannins and a long lasting finish.  Just 295 cases produced!

Ricominciare Cabernet Franc - The Catena family is one of the most important and influential families in Argentinian winemaking.  In 1902, Nicolás Catena arrived in Argentina from Italy. In Finca La Libertad in Mendoza, he continued an ancient tradition in new lands. Jorge, his grandson, inherited this legacy and passion for winemaking. Today, Viviana Catena, Jorge's daughter, and her family continue the traditional winemaking methods passed down by their great-grandfather.  Ricominciare only uses grapes from their San Vicente Vineyard, in La Consulta, in the Valle de Uco which as been in the Catena family for 50+ years, but as the name Ricominciara implies (it translates to "new beginnings"), marks a new beginning for Viviana and her family as she undertakes renovating the 100+ year old winery at the center of the San Vicente Vineyard property.

Everyone knows that Mendoza is Malbec country, but everywhere we went, winemakers were the most excited to talk about their Cabernet Franc, a grape that they see as having the potential to shine as bright as Malbec for Mendoza.  This  single vineyard, Mendoza Cabernet Franc is ruby red in color with soft violet tones. The nose has intense aromas and concentrated notes of cassis, ripe currants, and sweet spices including black pepper and cloves. His tenure provides integrated oak notes of cedar and vanilla. Fresh impact and excellent structure on the palate, reminiscent of ripe red fruits with hints of eucalyptus and tagged black pepper. This wine has an excellent balance and elegance with a well-structured, persistent finish.

Durigutti "Aguijon de Abeja" Cabernet Sauvignon -  Aguijon de Abeja (sting of the bee) is the Durigutti's organically farmed line from vineyards outside of Mendoza, and this delicious Cabernet Sauvignon is from the Salta district of Argentina.  Salta is one of the world's highest altitude winemaking regions, giving it a long, cool growing season where grapes are slowly ripened by the intense solar radiation/UV rays.
Organically grown and produced with no additives, native yeasts and bottled unfined/filtered with less than 25 mg/L sulfur these are wonderfully pure and pristine wines, overflowing with freshness.  Ruby red color with blue hints. Spicy, smoky nose with berry underpinnings. Well structured, with balanced tannins and a soft finish.

Ricominciare "Altisimo" Cabernet Sauvignon - Bold and beautiful in flavor, yet impeccably balanced, the Altisimo Cabernet Sauvignon ranks among the finest Cabs for quality and value in the market today, as it easily puts to shame most Cabernets costing two and three times its price. Sporting a deep purple color, amplifying aromatics ripe with blackberry, cassis, and dark chocolate, along with a boatload of flavors that are carried on ripe sensuous tannins, and is nothing short of delicious. Add beautiful mineral notes, a deft touch of spice, and well-integrated oak tones that flow harmoniously in the wine’s long satisfying finish.

Marchiori & Barraud Malbec -  The husband and wife team of Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud come from families with long winemaking traditions. They met while studying winemaking in Mendoza and together they pursued advanced studies at UC Davis before returning to Argentina.

After collaborating on a number of projects for other wineries, including more than a decade at Vina Cobos with Paul Hobbs, Luis and Andrea have finally accomplished their dream of making their own wine. They work with Andrea's family-owned Marchiori Vineyard, located in the Perdriel area of Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza. Several 100 point wines have come from this vineyard. Andrea manages the vineyard with exceptional care. Together they make a small amount of wine in pursuit of expressing the best of the terroir for each varietal.
This fantastic Malbec has a bright ruby red color and features aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and menthol with a
hint of nuttiness. Supple in the mouth, with good acidity and texture framing the flavors of blackcherry, licorice and walnut.
