Schiavenza 2019 Dolcetto d'Alba

$ 19.99
Located in Serralunga d’Alba, in the Langhe region of Piemonte, Schiavenza was founded in 1956 by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria. The land was formerly part of the Opera Pia Barolo, with its vineyards worked by sharecroppers (schiavenza in the local dialect). Today the estate is headed by the 2nd generation; winemaking sisters Enrica and Maura Alessandria, along with their husbands Luciano Pira and Walter Anselma. The 9.2 hectares in Serralunga, and a small plot in Monforte d’Alba are farmed biodynamically.

In Piedmont, Dolcetto’s home, the name means “little sweet one.” Funny enough, wines are generally lush but tart with loads black fruit flavors and occasionally aggressive tannins.

Schiavenza's Dolcetto is a classic example of the varietal. Bright ruby red with intense aromas of black cherry, raspberry, clove and marjoram . Medium-full with excellent concentration it shows exquisite ripeness, elegant tannins, very good acidity, impressive persistence. Outstanding harmony, as no one element stands out, it deftly moves from the zippy fruitiness of Dolcetto into a much more structured wine. Absolutely lovely now, this clearly has the backbone to improve for several years.
