This delicious and unique wine from Georgia (the country, not the state!) is the first “orange” wine to be featured in one of our sampler packs. For those of you not familiar with this buzz-worthy style of wine, this is a fantastic introductory wine; a little funky but not too much. While wines can and are made from the fruit know as an orange, an “orange” wine is a type of wine made by leaving the grape skins and seeds in contact with the juice during fermentation, like in red wine production. This creates an intensely flavored and deeply colored white wine that is usually and orange-amber color. This particular wine is made from the local Kisi varietal and fermented in qvevri (pronounced “kway-vree”), traditional clay vessels used in winemaking dating to 6000 BCE. This is amber colored “orange” wine has aromatic notes of dried orange peel and stone fruit leads to a palate of deep citrus with hints of black tea. It is full in the mouth, with chewy tannins and flavors of grapefruit, guava and vanilla that persist into a grippy finish.
