Powell & Son 2017 Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro
93pts Wine Enthusiast – 2017 vintage
This is a ripe, fleshy, bombastic GSM with a nose you could dive into like the deep end of a swimming pool, backstroking in milk chocolate, ripe blueberries and violets, lined with baking spice, ground pepper and cedar. The palate is rich, almost viscous, in texture. There’s a woodiness amid oodles of juicy, slippery fruit and chiseled tannins. Broad shouldered, with a good lick of alcohol, this is a high-octane wine that somehow also achieves some elegance and approachability. Drink now–2028.
93pts Vinous – 2017 vintage
Vivid ruby. Pungent, spice-accented scents of ripe red and dark berries, cola, potpourri and smoky minerals. Smooth and expansive on the palate, offering juicy cherry-vanilla and boysenberry flavors that are complemented by a hint of peppery spices. Becomes more taut with air and finishes smoky and very long, with building tannins adding shape and grip.
