February 2024 Mixed Case Special
$270 Value for just $195

Our latest mixed case has lots of fantastic, new reds and whites perfect wintertime.  We'll visit Portugal, Burgundy, Loire, Languedoc-Rousillon, Argentina and California in this latest case.

Sampler includes 1 bottle each:

Robert Hall Sauvignon Blanc (California) –  Quintessential varietal character abounds in this 2021 Paso Robles Sauvignon Blanc. Classic aromas of wet grass, pineapple, lemon chiffon and gooseberry are accented by hints of grapefruit, kiwi and lime. Subtle notes of lemongrass and green apple round out the layered and balanced nose. A crisp, zesty palate presents vibrant tropical flavors of pineapple, papaya and dragon fruit. The mouthfeel is full and round, offering secondary layers of melon and quince supported by a solid lemon-lime core. Notes of juicy pineapple, guava, citrus, and green apple emerge on a clean, exuberant finish.
Brocard Aligote (France) – Aligoté (pronounced “al-uh-GO-tay”) is Burgundy's "other white grape" and is becoming increasingly popular, with many calling it Burgundy's "Next Big Thing."  On the nose and palate Aligote typically offers a range of notes that includes white-fleshed fruit, white blossom, peach, lemon, linden, acacia, hazelnut, green apple, and occasionally citrus.  Brocard's Aligote hits most of the above notes both in aromatics and flavors.  The nose reveals a dominance of floral aromas with white flowers highlights which evolve into mineral, fruity notes with a discreet almond note. Fresh and nervy, this wine is well-balanced with a refreshing and persistent finish.
Morgan "Highland" Chardonnay (California) – We've gotten away from including Chardonnays in our samplers so we don't have to field phone calls and emails from the ABC (anything but Chardonnay) crowd wanting to make a substitution, but this is such an incredible wine and value that we felt obligated to include it.  There’s a compelling combination of precision and depth on this bottling. Aromas of lemon glaze, thinly sliced Asian pear and crushed oyster shell lead into an acid-driven palate, where rounded flavors of pear, honeysuckle and celery cling to a firm, exciting structure. 96pts Wine Enthusiast
Monte das Promessas Tinto (Portugal) - This unique mix of Castelão, Syrah, Touriga Franca, and Cabernet Sauvignon, offers bright and fresh flavors of red fruit and blueberries. A subtle hint of tannin graces the finish, bringing a pleasing balance to every sip. Aged in oak barrels for a short period, this wine is a friendly companion to a relaxed meal of BBQ, pizza, or pasta.
Angel's Ink Pinot Noir (California)Last time, we preferred their Central Coast (dark label) offering, but this year it is their Monterey bottling (white label) that really impressed us.  Bright but concentrated aromas of strawberry cream, singed sage and crushed rock kick off the nose. The palate is satisfyingly rich with baked cherry and pecan pie flavors, yet tense in texture and zippy in acidity.

Sanguineti "Nessun Dorma" (Italy) - Another fantastic wine from the "Small Vineyards" portfolio of family owned, organically farmed, hand crafted wines, Nessun Dorma is winemaker Antonio Sanguineti's Super-Tuscan style red.  A gorgeous red blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah Antonio named this fabulous wine for his favorite aria. With vines carefully selected from three different sites in the Maremma, the Maestro has made a true "SuperTuscan" that layers Merlot's intense floral aromas and elegant tannins, with Sangiovese providing the wine's bright and buoyant backbone. A judicious measure of Syrah adds depth and body, offering a bold expression of forest-floor truffle, ripe cherry, and blackberry preserves.

Patrick Lambert "Gourmandise" Chinon (France) - Gourmandise is French for “gluttony,” perhaps referring to the feeling of glutton one might feel after imbibing in a lot of this fresh and fun Cabernet Franc. In the appellation of Chinon in the Central Loire Valley lies the humble village of Cravant les Coteaux. This is where Patrick Lambert farms some of the area's most exciting wines rivaling the more well-known names like Baudry and Pallus.  The wine shows a bright black/red color with lush high-toned aromas of crushed strawberry and black raspberry, with hints of citrus and pepper. The palate is supple and bright with luscious black raspberry and red currant fruit, quite lush and supple but still with refreshing  acidity.

Domaine du Joncier "Ici" Lirac (France) - The feisty, vivacious Marine Roussel took her time finding her place in the family domaine. Her father, Pierre, was an agronomist/ winemaker and started Domaine du Joncier in 1964. However, as a young graphic artist, Marine sought adventure beyond her small, sleepy town in the Southern Rhône. After living in both Marseille and Paris, Marine eventually felt the pull to return home and joined the domaine in 1989, and has since taken on her new vocation with the zeal and style that only a true artist could possess.  By 2000 she had achieved organic certification for the vineyards and in 2011 biodynamic certification and now has France's top organic classification of Demeter certification.  The Ici highlights bright flavors of tart red cherry and plum spiced by shavings of cinnamon, cedar and camphor. A Grenache-dominant blend augmented by Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault, this full-bodied, crisply balanced wine is framed by taut, fine-grained tannins.

Bila-Haut by Chapoutier "Cotes du Roussillon Villages" Rouge (France) - Dry, fruity, minerally, earthy, full-bodied blend of 40% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 20% Carignan from vineyards certified Biodynamic/organic. Domaine Bila-Haut is owned by the well-known Rhone Valley Chateauneuf du Pape producer Michel Chapoutier. The name refers to an old farm villa, which was built high into the mountain slopes among some old vineyards, located just about as close as you can be to Spain. Deep, almost purple in color, this offers up loads of ripe red and blue fruits along with violet and pepper nuances. Silky and easy to drink, this offers up purity and elegance rarely encountered at this price range.

Cuarto Dominio "Tolentino" Single Vineyard Malbec (Argentina) - Cuarto Dominio is small winery founded by two fourth generation winemakers Andres Blanchard Perez and Javier Catena Pedro.  Their Tolentino Malbec is always one of the silkiest and smoothest Malbecs under $20, and the newly arrived (and new label too!) 2022 is no exception.  The Tolentino single vineyard Malbec has a dark violet color with dense black fruit aromatics and some mocha character in the nose. It also has very soft and silky tannins, natural balance, nice concentration and a distinctive smooth lengthy finish.

Vina Cobos "Felino" Cabernet Sauvignon (Argentina) - Felino is the entry tier for Paul Hobbs' Vina Cobos and delivers his signature style and quality for a great price.  Hobbs became famous as the winemaker for Simi and Opus One as well as consulting for the likes of Catena, Lewis, Peter Michael...   A dry, medium-bodied Cab that is concentrated with blackberry, blueberry, spiced plum, savory herb flavors fresh and creamy on the palate. Sourced from high-altitude sites in the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo, fermented in stainless-steel tanks and matured in American oak barrels giving nice toasty vanilla notes to the finish.

Hardys "Whiskers Blake" Classic Tawny (Australia) - This is the first time we've included a Port-style wine in our sampler, and if you're not already a fan of Port, then this amazing wine might change your mind. Named in honor of "Whiskers" The Man: Whiskers Blake, a roguish little bloke who worked in Hardys Tintara vineyard around the turn of the previous century (late 1800's). His job was scaring birds from the grapes with an old 8 gauge shotgun and unofficial product tester/taster.  Tawny red with amber hues and dark red tints. The nose offers rich fruit nuances, ripe fruit lifts supports by coffee, chocolate, raisins and nutty aromas. This classic Australian Tawny exhibits a smooth palate and mellow with good length and a dry finish.
We certainly hope you try and enjoy this fantastic after dinner wine but if you don't find it to your liking as a drink, it also makes and incredible port reduction sauce!
