Sauvignon Blanc is one of France's "Noble" grapes and has been making fantastic wines there since the 1500's (or at least that's when the name first appears in print). Since then it has spread around the world to just about every wine growing region. The great things about Sauvignon Blanc is that it expresses itself very uniquely given different growing conditions. Meaning New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs taste very different than the original Loire Valley, France examples, which taste very different than ones grown in California and so on.
Sampler includes 1 bottle each:
Chateau Lamothe de Haux Bordeaux Blanc (Bordeaux, France) - This flagship white boasts floral and fruity aromas and is fresh and round on the palate with a crisp, dry finish. Among the greatest values in Bordeaux Blanc. The classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc with lesser amounts of Semillon & Muscadelle. Golden yellow color with green tints. Very harmonious nose, expressing huge refinement and great ripeness, integrated fruit, silky floral and mineral notes. The mouth is focused, fleshy, very aromatic, with delicious acidity and freshness.
Saint Clair Family Estate Dillons Point Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) - About 20 years ago New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs took the world by storm and today it is the most popular style of Sauvignon Blanc. In the Southern Hemisphere and especially in New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc's pink grapefruit notes really express themselves strongly and the zippy acidity that the wines have are mouth wateringly refreshing. Not only are they delicious, most are very affordable with all but the rarest and best ones going for over $25. The St Clair family is one of Marlborough's most meticulous farming and winemaking families. They have identified over 140 different blocks in their vineyards, which they farm and ferment separately. Known for delivering a full spectrum of layered, intense, and pure flavors, the the Dillon's Point opens with expansive aromatic notes of tropical guava and pineapple with hints of fresh-cut green grass. Appealing weight on the crisp palate brings concentrated flavors of ripe passion fruit, green bell pepper, fresh currants and white grapefruit with a refreshing hint of salinity on the long, persistent finish.
Murdoch Hills Sauvignon Blanc (Australia) - If you NZ Sauvignon Blanc but they can sometimes be a little too grapefruity for you, then we think you'll love this one from neighboring Australia. Murdoch Hills is a small family owned estate in the Adelaide Hills region of Australia. A vibrant and bright pale white wine with notes of aromatic stone and tropical fruits on the nose. This Sauvignon Blanc carries the signature characteristics of the Adelaide Hills’ style with a clean and crisp palate of gooseberries and citrus fruits, followed by delicate acidity and a complementing mineral finish.
Green Quartz Sauvignon Blanc (Casablanca Valley, Chile) - Like most of the Sauvignon Blancs grown in the southern hemisphere, grapefruit a predominant flavor, but not the sole note that this wonderful wine hits. Sourced from high altitude, hand-picked vineyards in Chile’s Casablanca Valley, this vibrant Sauvignon Blanc will appeal to both New Zealand and California Sauvignon Blanc lovers, as it deftly splits the difference between zippy, tangy NZ style grapefruit notes with tropical and grassy notes associated with California’s best Sauvignon Blancs.
Oak Farm Sauvignon Blanc (California) - We love Lodi winemaker Dan Panella's wines and they never fail to over-deliver on the price/quality scale. Tasting like a Napa Sauvignon Blanc what would cost you twice the price, we think you'll love the new vintage of Oak Farm. This fantastic California Sauvignon Blanc captures fruity aromas of citrus, mango, and a touch of lime mixed with pyrazines and earthy characteristics like freshly cut grass and hay. On the palate, these citrus notes are complemented by tropical fruit flavors of guava and passion-fruit. The wine is balanced with crisp acidity and juicy flavors with a lingering finish.
Lis Neris "Picol" Sauvignon Blanc (Italy) - This amazing barrel aged Sauvignon Blanc from 4th generation winemaker Alvaro Pecorari will open up a whole new side of Sauvignon Blanc to you. Aged for 11 months in oak, it has a brilliant, rich yellow color with silver-green reflections. The bouquet is mango, citrus, sage and smoky mineral notes. The palate shows power and length that you don't usually expect from Sauvignon Blanc with a wonderfully complex structure featuring lots of juicy tropical fruit, grapefruity citrus, elderflower and kiwi balanced by bright acidity and tangy notes of nettle and sage. A 2015 vintage that shows the weight and complexity of age we doubt many of you have experienced from Sauvignon Blanc.
