Tasting Notes
The Fattoria Bonsalto 2023 "Primo Marzo" Toscana Rosso is a vibrant, light-to-medium-bodied Italian red wine crafted entirely from 100% Boggione, an ancient and incredibly rare native Tuscan grape variety. Historically nicknamed "ingannacane" (dog deceiver) or "palle di gatto" by local farmers, Boggione was nearly forgotten until Fattoria Bonsalto partnered with local universities to research, revive, and protect the grape. Winemaker Emiliano Falsini handles this rare fruit with artisanal care, initiating spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in open wooden vats and including 25% whole clusters. The wine is then aged in cocciopesto (terracotta amphorae) and refined in the bottle for 10 months, resulting in a low-intervention, character-forward expression.
On the nose, this vintage offers a delicate, savory bouquet dominated by fresh blackcurrant, mature cherry, and red berries, underscored by complex herbal and vegetal notes. The palate is juicy and rhythmic, delivering a crunchy fruit profile that draws stylistic comparisons to a Saumur-Champigny. It features fine-grained, non-invasive tannins and a bright, ripe acidity that makes it incredibly refreshing, especially when served slightly chilled at 14–16°C (57–60°F).
Thanks to its bright acidity and elegant, subtle structure, the "Primo Marzo" is exceptionally food friendly. It pairs beautifully with traditional Tuscan appetizers like cured meats (such as finocchiona or prosciutto) and medium-aged cheeses. For main courses, it complements lighter meats like roasted poultry, veal, or pork loin, and its vibrant acidity allows it to cut through the richness of fish dishes prepared in savory tomato-based sauces.
