A $120 value for just $88
Ever dream about going on a South African safari? Most people who like wine and visit South Africa are surprised to find out how extensive their wine industry is and by how beautiful their vineyards are. South Africa has been making top quality wines longer than almost every other prominent wine region outside Europe. Sadly, for a variety of reasons too few people are familiar with the wine from this fantastic wine producing country. Imagine yourself in a Land Rover sipping a glass of South African wine as your driver/guide points out the amazing wildlife to you.
-
Ridgeback "Mischief" Brut Sparkling - A delicate blend of tropical Sauvignon Blanc and daring Viognier, Mischief is the new sparkling wine from Ridgeback Winery, named after one of the chief qualities of the families beloved Ridgeback hounds. It offers a fresh, upfront, tropical array of lime, pineapple and green guava which evolves to hints of orange blossom and citrus on the palate and a flinty minerality lingering on the aftertaste.
-
Lubanzi Chenin Blanc - Chenin Blanc is South Africa's most widely planted varietal and Lubanzi is one of our favorites. Lubanzi is more than a passion project by its American founders Charlie Brian and Walker Brown. A "Certifed B Corp" that sources fruit only from organic and sustainable growers, the 2020 Lubanzi Chenin Blanc was honored by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as one of their Top 100 Wine of the Year in 2021. A lively pale yellow-green tinge in the glass followed by a wonderfully aromatic nose with hints of green melon, passionfruit, lemon zest and green apple, indicates all the delicious qualities present in this unique South African Chenin Blanc. The creamy palate, perfectly balanced with a zesty acidity makes your mouth water and a sense of longing to fill your glass and watch the perfect African sunset. The lingering minerality of this wine expresses the true terroir of Swartland.

Six Hats Shiraz - Six Hats is a label from South Africa's most award winning and renowned winemakers. The founder of Charles Back Wines, Spice Route and Fairview Wines (they're the ones that created the Goats do Roam wines!). In addition to his own labels, Back is also a key partner in Citrusdal Wines, a co-op of small family farmers that has been around since 1957. In 2007 the co-op was restructured with Back at the head and now produces their wines under the Fair Trade Certification rules, designed to represent the values of partnership, change, potential, equity, dignity and sustainability. Fragrant with dark berry, plum and pepper spice aromas, the wine is dry, medium-plus-bodied and textured with ripe dark fruits, red berry, cherry, pepper spice flavors. Tannins are fine and firm and compliment a long and vibrant finish.
-
Prime Cuts Red Blend - One of our favorite "everyday" drinkers from anywhere, this is a lot of wine for $10. A bold and juicy red that is soft and fruity enough to enjoy all alone, but with enough spice and backbone that it is perfect with your favorite cut hot off the grill. This red is made from a blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cinsault grapes from the Swartland area where the powerful South African sunshine makes sure these reach their utmost ripeness. All grapes are picked by hand, softly crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Flavors are just what you would expect from a South African red heavy on Syrah and Petit Verdot - Loads of dark berry fruit, creamy texture with spicy tannins and a hint of smoked meat.
-
Wildekrans Pinotage - In the early 2000's, when almost all of the pure Pinotage wines arriving to our shores were super smoky, ashy, rubber band-aid tasting beasts, Wildekrans was one of the first producers that taught us that Pinotage didn't have to be that way and that there was much more to this obscure South African varietal. Pinotage has come a long way since then, but Wildekrans it still one of our favorite Pinotage producers. This offering is medium bodied Pinotage showing dried plums, wild cherries as well as a blend of cinnamon and clove on the nose. An assortment of berries, including strawberries and raspberries on the palate, followed by subtle spice and wood smoke from gentle soaking in older French barrels.
- Ridgeback Cabernet Sauvignon - The region of Paarl in South Africa is internationally renowned for the quality of Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the area. This rendition from Ridgeback is no exception. Notes of dark fruit, plum, cherry and cigar box are evident on the intriguing nose. Ripe blackberry and dark cherry flavors on the palate support the mint and dark chocolate aftertaste. The tannins, fruit and oak on this noble example are perfectly integrated, resulting in a balanced and full-bodied wine, with a seamless finish.
