Jo’s Beer Corner – Nov 13th

Here is what’s brewing in Jo’s Beer Corner this week! ~ It’s a Beach(y) Party ~ In being new to the south I am entirely unfamiliar with this seventy and sunny weather that has been gracing me with it’s presence. In Ohio it is customary around this time of year to wallow indoors surrounded by oversized blankets, fuzzy socks, and thick sweaters. Last week it even snowed in Ohio. While I understand it is “technically” winter here, it certainly does not feel so. My paper-thin vampire skin was unprepared to receive this much sun so late in the year, and all my melanin has retreated into the depths of my person resulting in random bouts of sunburn. Due to this entirely uncustomary weather I find myself thinking tropical thoughts: the sand and waves, fruity drinks, pink lemonade while we sit by the pool (it also helps that my last name is Beachy so I feel connected by blood to the beach). I decided to hunt down some flavors that are both refreshing and timeless. Remember pink lemonade, all that tart and sugary goodness? I’ve got tart lemon ginger, coconut, and cucumber lime too. So grab your shades peeps… It’s a Beach(y) party! I’ll even play luau music and put little umbrellas out. New Belgium Tartastic Sour: 4.5% ABV – No IBU Brace yourself for a refreshingly tart snap. Tartastic’s lacto sour profile and fruity, spicy undertones enliven the taste buds with each bright, sessionable sip. A refreshing sour ale with the lip-tingling sweet and sour flavors of juicy lemon and ginger. Evil Twin Pink Lemonade IPA: 7% ABV –...

Here is what’s brewing in Jo’s Beer Corner this week! ~ The Spice of Life ~ It’s getting cold out so I decided to heat up your taste buds with some spicy favorites. In the past few years I have really been trying to grow my palate in the areas of spices. Of course I must pay homage to the “spicy” spices of the world and their native regions: India, the orient, Thailand and even some Hispanic regions. I want you all to know I officially can handle a level 2 spice at an Indian restaurant, I know, I impress myself too. With that in mind I wanted to bring a little spice to everyone’s lives by bringing you my favorite brews influenced by worldly spices. I have Thai influence lending some brews a heat while also adding creamy coconut. Some reflect the spicy peppers of our south of the equator neighbors. I even bring in herbal spices from Japan to tickle your spice-buds. So if your beer collection in your fridge is looking a bit dull and you want to spice up your beer life stop in and try one of this weeks featured brews. Southern Pines Brewing Suit & Thai IPA: 6.4% ABV – 60 IBU A marriage of Thai chillies, milky-sweet coconut, and Man of Law IPA. A selective blend of hops used in brewing lends a pineapple undertone. Westbrook Brewing White Thai Wit: 5% ABV – 16 IBU This beer is a twist on the classic style witbier. Brewed with fresh lemongrass, ginger root, and a dash of Sorachi Ace hops the result is a...

Jo’s Beer Corner – Oct 30

Here is what’s brewing in Jo’s Beer Corner this week! “All Brews Eve” Remember as a kid when you would joke and say, “if you could be anyone, real or fake, who would you be?” For me I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I know, I know… out of all the options I wanted to be a vet. It is even more surprising when you learn I am allergic to all animals. Well, once a year we are honored with the opportunity to do just that: be whatever or whomever we want. However, most people toss their dreams to the wind and opt for the simpler and less original vampire, witch, warrior, super hero or the like. Unlike these generic costumes our featured brews this week are anything but. I brought you some of our best, most intriguing and fall themed flavors. So stop by and have a taste of one of these fall favorites, after all… a witch may not be able to put a spell on you but I bet a few brews could. Deschutes Hopzeit Autumn IPA IPA: 7% ABV – 60 IBU Inspired by the flavors of Märzenbier this IPA combines malt with German hop varietals. Herbal and balanced, this Americanized blend of Bavaria complements the fall season. Cigar City Good Gourd Pumpkin, Yam Imperial: 9.6% ABV – 35 IBU (20% OFF) Bursting with real pumpkin flavor and yummy pumpkin spices including Ceylon cinnamon, Jamaican all-spice, Zanzibar cloves and nutmeg. This celebration of fall pairs well with pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup and costume parties. Crown Valley Imperial Pumpkin Smash Stout: 10.6% ABV – 48...

The Beer Corner – July 5th

THE CRAFT/MICRO -BREW WORLD IS ALWAYS CHANGING. KEEP AN EYE ON THIS SECTION SO SEE ANDI’S MOST EXCITING AND NEWEST ADDITIONS. JULY IS ALL ABOUT HOPS AT TAYLOR’S WINE SHOP! The craft beer industry is saturated with hops! The most popular and representative style in American craft beer, the India Pale Ale is something that keeps craft drinkers coming back for more. Most breweries in the US offer at least one year round IPA. There are even breweries so dedicated to the style that they offer a variety of IPAs suited for every beer drinker. It’s important to note that while IPAs are known for their fruity and floral flavor profile as well as their biting bitterness, not all IPAs are like this! IPAs are much more versatile than a lot of beer lovers think! There’s truly an IPA for everyone. IPAs derive their versatility from the core ingredient used in making them… hops! Hops are the flower that impart flavoring and aroma to an IPA. Because many hop varieties have bittering properties, they are used to balance out malt sweetness in other beers as well. Hops also have microbial and preservative properties which is one of the reasons why the style exists today. In the 1700s, Britain was exporting beer to different parts of the world to accommodate troops, emigrants, and anyone else with ties to the British Empire. A common place that the British exported beer to was India which meant the beer had to travel about six months. This meant the pale ales that were being shipped were at risk of spoiling on the trip or...

The Beer Corner – June 6th

ANDI’S BEER CORNER Reminder: Now through June 30th – All craft wheat beers will be an additional 20% off including singles! Check out what is brewing in Andi’s Beer Corner this week at Taylor’s Wine Shop! Rogue Ales & Spirits, Newport OR 6 Hop IPA – ABV 6.66% Available in 6 pack 12oz cans $12.99 Following a “ground to glass” philosophy, Rogue is one of a small handful of American breweries that grow all of their own ingredients. Following a global hop shortage crisis in 2008, they built a 42-acre hopyard in the Willamette Valley, the historic hop capital of the world. Fueled by a need to be self-reliant and understanding of the ingredients needed to produce great beer, they expanded their farms to include everything the brewery could ever need including grains, fruits, vegetables, and even honey. Their 6 Hop IPA uses 6 of the 10 varieties of hops from Rogue Farms, some of their own malts, rye, and their famous Pacman yeast strain. Rogue released 6 Hop in cans for the first time back in February, however, to get the full aroma of those fresh hops, it should definitely be enjoyed in a pint or tulip glass. Expect a fluffy white head and big piney hop aromas. There’s a little bit of citrus rind bitterness on the nose and this translates on the tongue as well. The earthy grass notes are balanced by a nice malt profile. A classic IPA for any hop lover. Gizmo Brew Works, Raleigh NC Deep Blue Saison – ABV 6.4% Available in 220z bottles $6.99 We’re happy to announce that we have...
