ORIN SWIFT 2014 MACHETE RED WINE
An opaque, purple chroma is brilliantly on display in the glass. An alluring fragrance of bright floral notes, violet juxtaposed with intriguing mountain characteristics. The entry is big, dark, and brooding with concentrated berry flavors, black cherry, mocha, and delightful earthy, brambly notes. Soft and lush, the tannins are sublime which offsets a pleasing mineral finish.

#6 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2016
A nearly opaque color sets in the glass with a hard, red complexion that is almost black. Aromas of ripe blueberries and candied plum mingle with toasted oak and charred vanilla. The entry is soft and inviting which paves the way for a lush mid-palate replete with layers of ripe boysenberry and cassis. The finish showcases ripe tannins and pronounced fruit which frames the two for nearly a minute.
94 Points, Wine Spectator
“Generous and expressive, big and brawny, offering a mouthful of tannins but also brimming with flavors and aromas, including Earl Grey tea, dark chocolate, dried violet and toasted gingerbread. Rich notes of plum and black cherry are balanced by forest floor and earthy accents, lingering on the long finish. Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Drink now through 2030.”
Dave Phinney is one of the most influential and innovative winemakers in California. He helped generate excitement for tasty, affordable red blends with distinctive labels when he created Zinfandel-based The Prisoner in the 2000 vintage, growing the brand to 85,000 cases before selling it in 2010. Phinney then turned his focus to his Orin Swift collection; this time it’s the Petite Sirah–based Machete rocketing to success. Phinney has a knack for mixing and matching vineyards and grapes. Here, Petite Sirah grapes get ripe enough to soften their tannins, while creating a backbone to blend with fruitier Grenache and Syrah.
