Learn Spanish Wines Part 1

Learn Spanish Wines & Regions Part 1- History of the Spanish Wine Industry   Spain & Wine Much like the rest of Europe, the Spanish people consider wine an essential part of life and a nourishing food more so than a simple beverage. Spanish culture revolves around family, food and enjoying all that life has to offer, but at a relaxed pace. At lunch Sangria and lighter wines are served, and in the evenings fuller bodied reds and whites are served in the cafes, restaurants and homes. Ancient Times What we now know as Spain has a long and prestigious wine history. 3,000 years ago the ancient Phoenicians prized the wines of Xera (modern Jerez) and 2,000 years ago the invading Romans used their “modern” winemaking techniques to make highly sought after wines from the native varietals. Vineyards flourished under Moorish rule, but mainly for eating purposes rather than winemaking. In 1492 Spain became a united county and, as prosperity flourished, wine became an increasingly important commodity.   Modern Spain Modern Spanish winemaking really begins with the devastation of the French wine industry during the late 1860’s. Trade with America had introduced a root louse known as phylloxera to French vineyards, and the destruction of the vineyards in much of France was almost complete (especially in Bordeaux). France and the rest of the world needed a new source for their wine and nearby Spain stepped up to fill the void. An influx of capital and winemaking talent revolutionized the industry, but the goal was to make lots of good wine, not necessarily great wine. By the turn of the...

Italian Wine Sale

September is Italian Wine Month at Taylor’s Wine Shop All Italian Wines on Sale! 1-5 bottles save 10% and 6+ bottles save 15%     Here are some great Italian Wines to check out this Month: Antonio Sanguineti 2013 Vermentino $16.99 This little gem of a white wine is from the Small Vineyards portfolio, an awesome collection of wines, mostly from Italy.  Small Vineyards only imports wines that meet certain criteria: they must be hand-harvested, from a family-owned estate, limited in production and earth-friendly.  Vermentino lives for sun, both in the vineyard and in the glass, so it has a very lively, up-front personality.  It is fresh and light, with a buoyant and fun palate of pineapple, white flowers, honeysuckle, apricots and citrus zest.   Santi 2014 Sortesele Pinot Grigio Reg: $14.99 Taylor’s: $12.99 A delightful and classic Italian Pinot Grigio from the Delle Venezie region.   This crisp white shows aromas of mineral, flowers, melon and white pepper with a palate that echoes the nose with the generous, soft but lively fruit balanced by good acidity and a long finish.   Tamellini 2013 Soave $15.99 This ain’t your mother’s Soave.  Gone of the days of oxidized, nutty, golden-brown and sour tasting Soave.  Today’s best Soaves crisp and clean and lets the fruit flavors shine through.  Green/gold-hued and medium-bodied, this wine is a superlative expression of Garganega, the indigenous Northern Italian grape varietal used to make Soave Classico. With white blossoms and delicate fruit on the nose – golden apple, pear, a tinge of ripe lemon. It features stony minerality, bright, refreshing acidity and lingering notes of honey yet is bone...
